Creation Museum on Martin Luther and Charles Templeton

August 11, 2009

One of the favorite claims of creationists is that belief in evolution leads to all kinds of evil. This is a prevalent theme at the Creation Museum. The following pictures from exhibits in the museum are designed to warn Christians of the evils of evolution.

Evolution leads to loneliness and suffering.

Evolution leads to loneliness and suffering.

Evolution leads to despair.

Evolution leads to despair.

With evolution there is no hope.

Evolution leads to a dead end.

Evolution leads to immorality.

Evolution leads to violence.

Evolution destroys truth.

Evolution destroys truth.

Evolution destroys the home.

Evolution destroys the home.

This is similar to the stereotypical attacks on atheists from Christians:

  • If you are an atheist, then what stops you from doing whatever you want?
  • If you are an atheist, what is to stop you from killing, robbing, raping, etc?
  • If you are an atheist, why be good?
  • Atheism leads to crime, immorality, despair, and other problems.

Creationists and Christians have NO EVIDENCE to support any of these claims. In fact the Creation Museum provides evidence that an atheist can live a fulfilled life and that a creationist Christian can become involved in repugnant immorality!  Consider the Creation Museum evidence on Charles Templeton and Martin Luther!

Most people know at least a little about Luther. Templeton was a famous television evangelist of the 1940s and 1950s who became an atheist. Here is a description from the organization that runs the Creation Museum, Answers in Genesis  (http://www.answersingenesis.org/creation/v22/i3/unbelief.asp):

He was generally acknowledged to be the most versatile of the new young evangelists. Templeton soon rose to prominence, even surpassing another dynamic young preacher, Billy Graham. In 1946, he was listed among those best used of God by the National Association of Evangelicals…

However, despite his popularity and seeming success as an evangelist, all was not well with Charles Templeton. The more he read, the more he found he was beginning to question the essentials of the Christian faith, because he could no longer believe God’s Word beginning with Genesis…

Templeton’s struggles affected others, too. As Templeton wrestled with the ‘demonstrable fact’ of evolution which made it impossible for him to believe ‘the biblical account of creation’,  he sought out his close friend, Billy Graham. This caused Graham as well to grapple with tough questions that shook the very roots of the faith he professed and preached daily — namely, ‘was the Bible completely true?’…

With ‘science’ pulling Templeton one way and the Bible seemingly pulling him in an altogether different direction, he resigned from his position with the National Council of Churches and took over the Department of Evangelism of the Presbyterian Church USA. At the same time, he hosted a CBS TV series, called Look Up and Live.

Finally, however, the doubts about everything he stood for became too great and he decided to leave the ministry.

In his autobiography, Farewell to God, Charles Templeton lists his ‘reasons for rejecting the Christian faith’. Most of these relate to the origins issue and thus the accuracy of the book of beginnings — Genesis…

Here are some pictures from the Creation Museum related to Charles Templeton:

So atheism leads to despair, depravity, and moral decay. Charles Templeton became an atheist in 1957. So he must have become evil, right? His evil atheistic lifestyle probably led to his quick demise, right? Wrong! He lived a productive life and died at the age of 85! Here is Answers in Genesis own description of the life of Templeton after becoming an atheist:

So what is Charles Templeton doing today? Since leaving the ministry in 1957, Templeton has taken a prominent place in journalism. Among other things, he has been the executive managing editor of the Toronto Star, editor-in-chief of Maclean’smagazine, director of News and Public Affairs for the CTV television network, and is the author of twelve books.

He is using his influence in the secular media to spread his destructive message, attacking the infallible Word of God.

[Ed. note (added August 2001): Templeton died on 7 June 2001 aged 85, and sadly had suffered from Alzheimer’s towards the end.]

So the evidence from the Creation Museum shows that belief evolution and atheism does NOT lead to despair and moral depravity! Instead, Templeton’s evolution and atheism led to a productive life as a journalist and author!

The Creation Museum promotes Martin Luther as an example of what happens when someone follows “scripture alone.”

Martin Luther followed scripture alone.

Martin Luther followed scripture alone.

Let’s compare the activities of Templeton with that of Martin Luther. He is the most important figure in protestant Christianity other than characters from the bible. He wrote hymns such as “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” (one of my favorite hymns). He also wrote On The Jews and Their Lies (http://www.humanitas-international.org/showcase/chronography/documents/luther-jews.htm). Let’s see what this great Christian had to say!

In brief, he says in the first commandment that he will be their God. Then, how do you explain that he will not listen to these Jews? They must assuredly be the base, whoring people, that is, no people of God, and their boast of lineage, circumcision, and law must be accounted as filth. If there were a single pious Jew among them who observed these, he would have to be heard; for God cannot let his saints pray in vain, as Scripture demonstrates by many examples. This is conclusive evidence that they cannot be pious Jews, but must be the multitude of the whoring and murderous people…So it became apparent that they were a defiled bride, yes, an incorrigible whore and an evil slut with whom God ever had to wrangle, scuffle, and fight…

Luther has many other nasty things to say about the Jews. He then goes on to list an 8 step plan to exterminate the Jews.  This Christian’s plan had obvious influence on his fellow German Christian, Adolf Hitler.

First, to set fire to their synagogues or schools and to bury and cover with dirt whatever will not burn, so that no man will ever again see a stone or cinder of them.

Second, I advise that their houses also be razed and destroyed.

Third, I advise that all their prayer books and Talmudic writings, in which such idolatry, lies, cursing, and blasphemy are taught, be taken from them.

Fourth, I advise that their rabbis be forbidden to teach henceforth on pain of loss of life and limb.

Fifth, I advise that safe-conduct on the highways be abolished completely for the Jews.

Sixth, I advise that usury be prohibited to them, and that all cash and treasure of silver and gold be taken from them and put aside for safekeeping.

Seventh, I recommend putting a flail, an ax, a hoe, a spade, a distaff, or a spindle into the hands of young, strong Jews and Jewesses and letting them earn their bread in the sweat of their brow, as was imposed on the children of Adam (Gen. 3 [:19]). For it is not fitting that they should let us accursed Goyim toil in the sweat of our faces while they, the holy people, idle away their time behind the stove, feasting and farting., and on top of all, boasting blasphemously of their lordship over the Christians by means of our sweat. No, one should toss out these lazy rogues by the seat of their pants.

If we wish to wash our hands of the Jews’ blasphemy and not share in their guilt, we have to part company with them. They must be driven from our country. Let them think of their fatherland; then they need no longer wail and lie before God against us that we are holding them captive, nor need we then any longer complain that they are burdening us with their blasphemy and their usury.

So from the evidence presented in the Creation Museum, an evangelist who becomes an atheist lives a happy, productive life. A creationist Christian writes a plan for the extermination of the Jews that is carried out by Adolf Hitler!  The only conclusion one can draw from this evidence presented in the Creation Museum is that atheists who know evolution to be true are of higher moral character than the most famous creationist and protestant Christian!

Creation Museum Full of Dogma, Void of Science

August 9, 2009

I went to the Creation Museum on August 7 with the Secular Student Alliance and PZ Myers. This “museum” supposedly provided scientific evidence for creation and refutations of evolution. However, there was no science in the “museum”.

Christians Can Not Use Human Reason

Christians Can Not Use Human Reason

I think the picture above is worth 1,000 words. Books on the left represent Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and other sciences. Yet, these sciences are not to be trusted. Instead, we are to rely on words that men claim came from a god.  This is not science, this is DOGMA. The museum proudly claims that Christians should not use their brains or human reason. Creationism is not to be “proven” (or even examined), but it is assumed to be true. This has been a constant theme of Answers In Genesis, the ministry behind the Creation Museum.  The following link is from Answers in Genesis http://creation.com/moving-forward, and it was also publishned in volume 24 of Creation Magazine:
We don’t try to ‘prove’ the Bible with science; rather, we accept the Bible’s propositions as true without proof, i.e. as axioms or presuppositions

  • The heavens, Earth and everything in them were created in six consecutive normal days, the same as those of our working week (Exodus 20:8–11).
  • Earth is about 6,000 years old, since Jesus said mankind was there from the ‘beginning of creation’, not billions of years later (Mark 10:6).
  • Adam sinned and brought physical death to mankind (Romans 5:12–19; 1 Corinthians 15:21–22).
  • Since man was the federal head of creation, the whole creation was cursed (Romans 8:20–22), which included death to animals, with the end of the original vegetarian diet for both humans and animals (Genesis 1:29–30).
  • God judged the world by a globe-covering Flood, which Jesus and Peter compared with the coming Judgment (Luke 17:26–27; 2 Peter 3:3–7). This destroyed all land vertebrate animals and people not on the ocean-liner-sized Ark.
  • God then judged the people by confusing their language at Babel—after they had refused to spread out and repopulate the Earth after the Flood.

It’s important to realize that all ‘facts’ of science do not speak for themselves, but are interpreted within a framework.Evolutionists start with the axiom of naturalism or materialism, i.e. God (if He even exists) performed no miraculous acts of creation.

Biblical creationists interpret the same facts and observations, but within the framework outlined above.

Creationists try to claim that their presuppositions are equivalent to scientific presuppositions. However, that is not the case. Here is a description of scientific presuppositions as summarized by PZ Myers (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/12/false_equivalence.php):

I think that explanations should deal with as much of the evidence as possible; they should avoid contradictions, both internal and with the evidence from the physical world; they should be logical; they should make predictions that can be tested; they should have some utility in addressing new evidence. It’s not too much to ask, I don’t think. “Darwin” is not one of my presuppositions, however. Charles Darwin provided a set of explanations that, after some modification, meet my criteria. I am quite prepared to throw Darwin out, however, if a better explanation came along or if evidence that contradicted his ideas were discovered.
Let’s compare these two presuppositions. Creationisms “starting point” is that the earth was created 6,000 years ago, in 6, 24-hour days. There was a worldwide flood around 2384 B.C.E., killing all people and animals with a few exceptions. This is ASSUMED by Creationists to be true. All facts must “fit into this framework.”
Scientific presuppositions are designed not to filter out bad conclusions, not to reach an assumed conclusion. If an idea conflicts with the evidence, then discard that idea. If more data provides new revelations, then old theories may be modified or replaced with new theories.
Creationism starts with conclusions. Science does not start with any conclusion, and it discards bad conclusions.
How bad does the creation museum get? The garden of Eden contains Kangaroos, Penguins, Chimps, and other animals all in a rain forest environment. All animals (including Lions) originally were herbivores (ate only vegetation). Dinosaurs rode in Noah’s ark.  There is no evidence for any of this nonsense. Such claims are based upon dogma, not science, and should not be taught in any science class.
